Breton Flag

The Breton so called flag " Gwenn Ha Du " what means " White and Black ".

The blazon of kings, then dukes of Brittany was a héralique ecu " of ermines full ". Before the war of 1939, the Breton Nationalist Party considered useful to create for Brittany, a true flag formed by 9 horizontal bands(strips): 5 blacks and 4 alternated whites.

The field of ermines was kept(preserved) in canton to call back(remind) the recollection of the dukes of Brittany.

One says that the ermine was chosen as its purity. Formerly, an ermine hunted(chased away) by a pack of dog met itself forced to a big puddle of mud. The ermine was allowed wasted(destroyed) rather than to cross the puddle what would have had for consequence to make dirty its coat. It is this pride which made her(it) so exemplary with the eyes of those that chose it as symbol: " Rather mourrir than make dirty me. "

The Black bands(strips) represent the dioceses where was spoken the French language: Deception, Nantes, Rennes, Saint-Malo, Saint-Brieuc.

The white bands(strips) the dioceses of Breton language: Trégor, Léon, Cornouaille and Gates.
